Bob
Phillips
Award for Outstanding
Leadership
(posthumous)
The late Bob Phillips was
recognized throughout his 30 years of community service as a progressive and
strong leader who contributed greatly to heritage preservation, the
development of West Quebec and progress among the English-speaking community
of the Outaouais.
Bob Phillips' many contributions to the
community include:
- Since the 1970s, he was a strong
supporter and promoter of the Outaouais Alliance and its successor, the
Regional Association of West Quebecers, as well as the Historical
Society of the Gatineau (now the Gatineau Valley Historical Society)
- Construction of "The Grange" in Cantley,
1972-1976, which is always open to community groups concerned with the
development of West Quebec.
- As President of the Historical Society
of the Gatineau, 1984-1988, he worked with the Chairman of the NCC, Jean
Pigott, to save the Chelsea Pioneer Cemetary (now owned and protected by
the Historical Society).
- Honorary member of the Historical
Society of the Gatineau, 1990
- Instilled pride in and concern for West
Quebec through his weekly "View from the Outaouais" columns in the
Ottawa Citizen, 1987 - 2003.
- Co-owner and publisher of the West
Quebec Post and the Aylmer Bulletin, 1991-1995 (and Publisher Emeritus
of the West Quebec Post from 1995 until his death).
- Respected for his leadership as a
progressive, constructive voice for moderation and progress in the
English-language community of the Outaouais.
His volunteer activities
included:
- Founding Executive Director of Heritage Canada, 1973
- Heritage Preservation leadership in Ottawa, as leader of Heritage
Committee of "A Capital for Canadians" Committee, 1967 - c. 1972
- Instrumental in saving Billings House, Nicholas Street Gaol, the
East Block of the Parliament Buildings, Union Station and the inside of
the Rideau Street Convent
- Recipient of the Order of Canada in 1987
