Regional Association of West-Quebecers

Nominator speech by Michael Chiasson
Acting Chairman, Western Quebec School Board

Members of the West Quebecers Association, invited guests, Ladies and gentlemen:

I am delighted to be here this evening as Vice-Chair of the Western Quebec School board to perform the delightful task of presenting Mr. Kevin Drysdale who has been nominated and chosen to receive the distinction of the Education award for his contribution to education in this area for over 40 years.

Kevin or “Archives” as he is fondly referred to by friends and colleagues alike because of his remarkable ability to remember students from his many years of teaching and administration, has managed to touch many individuals, families and organizations over the years and continues to do so despite his recent retirement from the Western Quebec School Board.

His continues to participate on the Regional Health board, the Epilepsy association, Valleé Jeunesse Board all of which benefit the English community in particular ways. This long standing association and dedication is founded on the extent of his experience while working at the school board.

He worked at one time or another as Coordinator of Human Resources, Coordinator of Special Education, Director of Educational Services, High School Principal, Adult Education in Val D’OR and Secretary General teacher and principal in several institutions.

Kevin was an innovator as he ushered in the first junior high school model in Western Quebec which continues to function today in Symmes Junior High school and Hadley Junior High School; a man before his time to say the least.

Kevin has not been silent in his retirement and practices what he encouraged his students to pursue: that we all should be life-long learners. Kevin recently enrolled in a technology course and has learned to build web pages. He has also turned his hand to construction and built a humble cottage in PEI for his family and grandchildren to enjoy; who said you can’t teach an old dog new tricks?

When Kevin first applied for a job with the Western Quebec School Board he wrote on the resumé the following four points that typifies the conviction and dedication to his chosen profession and is the reason why he has been nominated by his colleagues and now chosen to receive the West Quebeckers Education Award:

            It said:

t       A willingness to assume responsibility beyond the demands of my position

t       Strong interpersonal and communication skills

t       A desire to provide leadership

t       A working knowledge of French

Ladies and gentlemen, it is our opinion that Kevin is a man of his word and a worthy recipient of this award. Kevin, from all of us congratulations and thank you for your dedication to the West Quebeckers and to the English education system over the past 40 years.

It has been our pleasure and as a result of your continued commitment we are now the beneficiaries of your leadership, strong interpersonal and communication skills.
