Sandwich Generation Workshop & Upcoming Community Awards

by Gaetanne Séguin

This promises to be a banner year for the Regional Association of West Quebecers! We just wrapped up a very successful two-evening workshop in Aylmer called ‘Empowering the Sandwich Generation’, which provided loads of useful information and advice for people in our community who are juggling the responsibilities of caring for elderly parents or relatives and taking care of their children at the same time. RAWQ coordinated the workshop for the Quebec Association of Adult Learning (QAAL) which is running these workshops across the province.

The facilitator said our workshop attracted the greatest number of community participants. Kelly Howarth also had this to say: “Thank you for the wonderful experience of meeting with and working with your community around Empowering the Sandwich Generation. The collective brainstorming and sharing amongst workshop participants was refreshing”.

Thanks to everyone involved for sharing their personal stories and struggles, and to Symmes Junior High School for allowing us to hold the workshop in their cafeteria.

Members of our community will also be participating in the selection committee to choose the winner for this year’s West Quebecers Community Awards. The deadline for nominations is Thursday March 31st, which means you have one more week to nominate a deserving volunteer from your community. Judging by the names we’ve already received, the awards selection committee will have a challenging job, but given the vast array of deserving volunteers in West Quebec, we know there are still many more names that should come in.

Do you know someone who has volunteered time and energy toward improving their community? Have you met a person who has made a difference in West Quebec? This is your opportunity to help us honor someone who works tirelessly for their community with little or no recognition.

To make it as easy as possible, a nomination form is on our website at www.westquebecers.com, which you can submit to us online. If you need more information, give me a call at
682-9602.

Please don’t miss this opportunity to nominate a volunteer you think should be honored. We want them to know they are appreciated. And let us know if you want to attend the banquet, which will
be held on Friday, June 10th at Camp Fortune. It will definitely be an event you won’t want to miss!

Our 2005 Annual General Meeting is also shaping up to be an event worth attending, especially given the many events and opportunities we have before us this year. The
AGM is set for Tuesday May 31st at the Clarion Hotel in Gatineau. More details to come!
