West Quebecers Host Golf Tournament to Help Raise Funds for a
Performance Arts Auditorium Dream

by Gaetanne Séguin

"Wow, thanks so much for thinking about us. How could I say no to such a generous offer!"
That was the reaction by George Singfield, the Principal at Symmes Junior High School, after The Regional Association of West Quebecers offered to share proceeds from our 3rd Annual Best Ball fundraiser golf tournament next month to help the Symmes/D’Arcy McGee School communities transform their gymnasium into a performing arts auditorium with a stage, seating area and changing rooms.

"Having an arts auditorium has been the goal for several years and things really started to take shape last winter when the Western Quebec School Board (WQSB) approved a 50/50 funding partnership with the school communities," says Mark Caissy, Chair of Symmes’ Governing Board.

Overall, the project will cost about $150,000.00 and Symmes and D’Arcy need to pay half of that amount. So far they’ve been able to raise between $15,000.00 and $20,000.00 through a variety of community fundraising initiatives, such as “Setting the Stage”, a benefit concert and a “Buy a Brick” campaign.

With WQSB support, current plans are to have the arts theatre ready for this 2005/2006 school year, hopefully later this fall. You can help them meet their goal by participating in our tournament September 18th.
The fundraiser costs $90-dollars per person which includes a round of golf, a golfer’s loot bag, a snack on the course, a scrumptious dinner afterwards and amazing prize giveaways. Prizes include $10,000 for the first Hole-in-One on a par 3, two OttawaGolf.com 2006 season passes (you can play at numerous area golf clubs for a minimal charge), golf clubs, and a wide variety of prizes donated by local restaurants and businesses. There will also be a raffle for a special commemorative painting.

Don’t worry if you’re not much of a golfer; it is a best ball tournament, so all you need is one relatively good player on your team. And if you prefer, you could just come to the dinner for $32-dollars and still qualify for the prize giveaways! Come early to welcome the golfers back, have cocktails or join in the putting contest!

Let’s take advantage of this opportunity to show community spirit and support Symmes and D’Arcy McGee Schools by putting together as many foursomes as we can! To sign-up (singles, pairs, threesomes or foursomes) call West Quebecers Community Liaison Officer Gaetanne Séguin at 819-682-9602, register online at www.westquebecers.com, email clco@magma.ca, or drop by the RAWQ office at 53 rue Principale and register in person.

A portion of the proceeds will also help pay for the West Quebecers New Residents’ Program which is designed to help English-speaking new residents to West Quebec adjust to life here. A free information package helps new residents access community and government services which can be difficult if you don’t speak French.

Since the program was launched about two years ago, 240 individuals and families have received an information package, as have numerous out-of-province and non-Canadian Heritage College students.

The package’s government and services contact sheet has just been updated, and the distribution network is being expanded. Sometimes we get requests from people who have lived here for a year or more and say they just heard about the program. After receiving the package, they tell us they were really helped by the information they received. With the goal of ensuring that as many new residents as possible can receive our information package, we have produced specially designed bookmarks which will be displayed in key places where new residents are likely to go. If you have any suggestions, please let us know.

There are many other initiatives on RAWQ’s horizon, so expect more news to come later this fall. And until then, enjoy the rest of this summer heat.
