Acting President's Report
by
John Trent

The promotion and showcasing of the arts and culture in the Outaouais is one among the numerous goals of the Regional Association of West Quebecers.

During the whole past summer, two of our intrepid volunteer Board members, Ilse and Noel Gates, researched all the cultural events that are being prepared for the present and coming season throughout West Quebec. They contacted all the groups and organizations they could find out about including those in our Community Directory of English Service and Community Institutions in the Outaouais (copies of which can be obtained from our office (682-9602) or located on our website:
www.westquebecers.com

Our small but diligent staff transformed this material into a chronological “eBulletin” which can also be found on our website. Not wanting to hide our candle under a bushel, we will be offering it in hard copy to the local newspapers. What it means is if you are tired of trekking to Ottawa, you now have a single, comprehensive source you can easily tap into to have at your fingertips a list of all the artistic and cultural events you can enjoy right here in our region.

Let’s say it’s your cultural one-stop shopping. The eBulletin will be renewed quarterly.
(Next issue December 03)

An impressive committee, convened by Peggy Henderson and including Board member Francine d’Eça, will present at Christmas time a production that centers on a dramatic reading of Dickens’
“A
Christmas Carol” featuring a very special guest reader: 1999 Gemini Award-winning actress, Meredith Henderson. A Dickens Chorus, directed by Mary Tevlin will also be on hand to add a musical touch to this special event.

There will be two presentations at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturday December 20th at La Maison Elisabeth Bruyère Auditorium (formerly the Notre-Dame Convent) 57 rue du Couvent in Aylmer.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and only $5 for children 8-16. They are available at the West Quebecers office, 53 Principale (682-9602) or at Tea ‘n Tole, 1055 Ch. Aylmer with all proceeds going to the St. Vincent de Paul Society’s “Feed a Child Program”. Make it your first Christmas gift.

With the help of Peter Gillies of the Wakefield Players, we have submitted a grant request to the Department of Canadian Heritage to run theatre workshops and produce community theatre in three West Quebec communities: Wakefield, Aylmer and Shawville. We will know the results of our request next summer.

We also have three events in the planning stage. The Casino du Lac Leamy and its theatre have become one of the biggest attractions in the region. But only one of the artists of great talent of our region has been seen on its stage. We know we have loads of talent because our Vice-president, Shaun Peppy, put on an award-winning cultural show during our Annual Meeting last year and he didn’t even begin to tap the pool of available artists. So we are working on packaging a professional show with a couple of Canadian headliners and artists from the Outaouais that we can propose to the Casino. We call it “Autumn in the Outaouais”. Watch for it.

Shaun, who is chair of our Cultural Affairs Committee and quite an accomplished musician himself, is also working on a series of concerts for the younger set (and, of course, the young at heart) at the Black Sheep in Wakefield and possibly at other venues in the region. The RAWQ will rock.

The hundreds of visual artist in West Quebec have not been left out of our planning. What we have in mind is an annual Arts Auction and Banquet. These have been very successful wherever they have been run, but its never been tried in the Outaouais. We would especially want to work with the Artists' Tours in our region.

Now, of course, we cannot promise that all this will come to pass. We will need the active help and participation of our artistic community and those who are interested in the arts. We are particularly looking for partner groups. So if you are interested please get in touch with us.

And happy Christmas and New Year.
