News from your Community Association! News from your Community Association! As a member of the Regional Association of West Quebecers or “West Quebecers,” you already receive a newsletter twice a year in May and November. Now 'Newsnips' will be sent out to you in February and August. This mini-newsletter will make sure you receive more timely West Quebecers news. Easing the time commitment for volunteer directors, starting in Fall 2002, West Quebecers Directors will have just four (4) meetings a year (as opposed to the usual 8). The Executive will continue to meet monthly to carry on the day-to-day business of the association.
For the last eight (8) years two tireless volunteers, Caroline Belzile and Shirley Smyth, along with Sheilagh Murphy, have run the board of ENRICH. They have done this on top of full time jobs. The work involved applying for project money, hiring coordinators for projects and doing all of the administrative work involved in an association. They are running some wonderful programs most recently situated in rural Outaouais, after using them in Aylmer for many years. Aware, Prepared and Linked, HELP and PACT are all award-winning projects directed at youth. We wish Carolyn and Shirley all the best as they retire from the Executive of ENRICH and turn the reigns over to Sheilagh Murphy. ENRICH is still looking for Board Directors as of their AGM June 2002, if any of you have an interest in volunteering for the benefit of our youth in the Outaouais! There has been no problem changing over to our new name, 'The Regional Association of West Quebecers (RAWQ)' or West Quebecers for short. Publicity for and acceptance of the new name has gone smoothly. West Quebecers found itself hosting two (2) events in June. One was as a co-sponsor of the Quebec Anglophone Heritage Association (QAHN) Conference reception June 8, 2002. The other was June 19, when we hosted 80 business persons for dinner at the meeting of the Shawville/Clarendon Revitalisation Committee and their Chamber of Commerce. Our president, Rick Henderson, was on hand to present the ins and outs of the business sign law using visuals prepared by staff. Rick was able to discuss with the business audience the history of mutual interests between West Quebecers and Shawville citizens and to let them know the various ways we could be counted on to support them in their struggles with Bill 101 and the Charter of the French Language. We even gained a new Director, Lynn Wilson of Shawville - Welcome aboard, Lynn! On July 16, Julie Fine, Executive Director, hosted those directors who are new to the association at an Orientation Session in the office boardroom. She presented them with a revamped Director's Directory and took them through a session that covered the inner workings of the association, our current activities, and our working relationship with our Provincial partners. Good luck to our new directors: Noel and Ilse-Marie Gates, Ruth Rappak, Robert Willson, Archie Smith and Lynn Wilson! The West Quebecers office also welcomed Doug Mackenzie of Aylmer, for a 3-week work placement upon completion of his office computer course at the West Quebec Career Centre. Doug helped with our archive, database, computer glitches, board agendas and meeting materials, mailouts and anything else that needed doing. We sent Doug off with an enthusiastic recommendation and we wish him the best of luck in seeking employment in the area. The RAWQ Board of Directors, staff and some community leaders will meet September 28, 2002 for an all day Strategic Planning Session. This assessment of where we are and where we want to go is much needed. The last Priorities and Planning Session was held in 1999. Julie and Kathy hope you have enjoyed this glimpse into the current goings-on at RAWQ. We urge you to keep in touch and let us know what's happening in your area.
