Attention All Local History Enthusiasts! The Municipality of Clarendon in the
Pontiac
is celebrating its 150th anniversary next
year (2005). A big program of events is being planned for
the first two weeks of July.
In the meantime, the public is being asked to help in putting
together a history of the municipality. One major project
is the creation of a self-guided tour, with a map, of the
historical places within the municipality, such as the
founding schools, churches and cemeteries, as well as early
pioneer homes, mills and industries.
Anyone who would like to share old photographs, stories, papers and
other material relevant to these places, or even to their
own homestead or house in Clarendon, is asked to contact
Jo-Anne Brownlee at
(819)
647-6958,
or to e-mail
rjb@qouest.net
It is hoped to have many festivities at Stark’s Corners, and
therefore information about the former cheese factory, the
Orange Lodge building, Elliott pump factory, school and
church would be appreciated.
Anyone wishing to join the planning committee is asked to contact
Lorna Young at the Municipal Office for the date and time of
the next meeting. Call

Cultural Policy in the
Pontiac.
The Pontiac CLD (Local Development
Council) presented the preliminary version of its cultural
policy at a public meeting at the Bryson Theatre on
September 18 and it was adopted by the Pontiac MRC (Regional
County Municipality) on September 27.
It is expected that the final version will be put before the
MRC before the end of the year.
Supported by a grant from the Québec
Ministry of Culture and Communications the CLD’s
cultural development agent, Ben Kuhn, and a cultural policy
development committee have been drafting this policy and
holding public consultations to find out how the population
of the Pontiac view their cultural future. The policy, when
finally adopted, should serve as a tool for the planning of
activities, such as the establishment of cultural centres
and a cultural website, the provision of equipment such as
art supplies, books or musical instruments, and the
creation of a public calendar of cultural events. An action
plan, once adopted, would be the basis for setting up a
budget and obtaining resources.
To get more information and discuss ideas for activities and
projects, contact Ben Kuhn at
