October 15 -22
Mick Armitage Band,
accompanied by Pontiac singer Gail Gavan, will be in Dublin, Ireland, where they will be recording a live CD and DVD. They will be accompanied by a number of relatives, friends and fans, and Armitage is hoping that the group will in the end number 100 or more.  So far, 35 people have booked.
Anyone interested in joining the group can get information from Fairlawn Travel at (613) 723-9223.A radio contest through Y101 will offer a chance to win the trip for free.

Aylmer Ecumenical Choir is looking for new members, aged 16 and over; all voices needed. On October 25 practices in preparation for Advent begin, under the direction of Hélène Brunette. Place: St. Paul's Church choir loft.  Time: 7.00 pm. Accompanied by David Irving, the Choir sings in French, English and some Latin.

October 25.  Planning meeting of the Pontiac School of the Arts.  At the CEDEC office, 357 Main Street, Shawville.  All interested persons are welcome.

On November 4 and 5 freelance writer Katharine Fletcher will give a course on Becoming a Freelance Writer.  This course is offered by the Pontiac School of the Arts and supported by Heritage College in Gatineau. In the same weekend the Pontiac School of the Arts will offer a course on Nature Writing by author and columnist Robin Stone. At St. James's School in Portage du Fort. October 26On CBC Radio 1, Chris MacLean and Kuljit, from the group Galitcha (appearing at the Black Sheep Inn on November 19), will be interviewed by Shelagh Rogers on the program Sounds Like Canada. At 10.00 am. MacLean and Kuljit will be talking about their new album Célébration Blé d'Inde Celebration and their project of sending medicine to a clinic in Timbouctou in Mali.

October 29.  Ron Moores, from Cantley, host of The Back 40 on CKCU (93.1 FM) will launch the 29th Annual Funding Drive for the station, which is entering its 31st year of broadcasting. October 23.  Reception hosted by the La Pêche Heritage Committee for the presentation of the 2006 La Pêche Centenary Plaques, in continuation of the Municipal Heritage Recognition program. Over the past 10 years this program has produced an inventory of more than 100 centenary buildings in La Pêche.  The Gatineau Valley Historical Society (GVHS) is using the occasion for a special monthly meeting in support of the program. At 7.30 pm., at the La Pêche Arena (Salle Desjardins), in Ste-Cécile-de-Masham. Following the presentation of the centenary plaques GVHS President Marc Cockburn will give a talk on the historical nature and evolution of Masham and Wakefield, illustrated by maps. Plaques will be presented to the following owners of heritage properties: Harold Gauthier (Gauthier Farmhouse, Lac des Loups), Blair Kingsbury (Maison Clarence Kingsbury and the Whipporwill Campsite, Masham), Clare Davidson (Marshall Brown Farmhouse, Wakefield), Geneviève Parent (Chalet de Thomas Cameron Bate, Wakefield), the Municipality of La Pêche (R.O. Morris Tannery/Wakefield Library), Patricia Bassett and Philippe Cappeliez (Senator Bellcourt Cottage, Wakefield) and Tijs and Vivian Bellar-Spruyt (Maison Bellar-Spruyt, Lascelles).  Descriptions of these properties appear in the GVHS Newsletter for October-November, provided by Norma Geggie. October 22.  Author Frances Itani, whose novel Deafening was nominated for the 2003 IMPAC Dublin Literary Award, will read from her works at Solstice Books in Wakefield.  At 3.00 pm.

Admission free, but as space is limited tickets will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis. Solstice Books is located at 721 Riverside Drive in Wakefield.

 The Wakefield Book Club
The Book Club meets at the Wakefield Public Library at 10.00 am. on every third Friday from October to June.  If you are looking for a book club there is space available here.
