September Events

September 17 and 24.  Dr. Harold, a one-man play by John Hardie about the life of Dr. Harold Geggie, the founder of the Gatineau Memorial Hospital, will be staged at the senior citizens' home, Le Manoir, on Riverside Road, at 7.00 pm. on each of the above dates.Dr. Geggie's daughter Norma, herself a Wakefield author, will be present to answer questions about her father's career. John Hardie is a member of the Board of the Gatineau Memorial Hospital Centre.
Tickets: $10.00 from the Hospital boutique, Chez Eric and at the door.  Seating is limited.
Proceeds in support of the Centre.

September 8 -October 3. Vernissage of a new exhibition of paintings by Ruby Ewen, under the title "Mountain Serenade, Lake O'Hara Complex". The pictures are Ruby Ewen's vivid response to the mountain and lake landscape of the Lake O'Hara complex in Yoho National Park in British Columbia. September 23.  Annual General Meeting of the Western Quebec Literacy Council.  The program includes story telling by Venetia Crawford, actively associated with the Pontiac Archives, and Armand Ducharme.  There will be also be an Awards and Recognition Ceremony, and a Workshop on the theme Make Your Own Book.

September 1 - 30. Artists Sandy Castledine and Sue Williams display their recent work in their exhibition Country Mouse/City Mouse, at the Marché des Artisans, Riverside Drive, in Wakefield.For information call 819-459-2662.

On September 10 the Wakefield Grannies held their Second Annual Great Grannies' Concert on the covered bridge in Wakefield.  The headline feature of the show was Afraranto (i.e. Butterfly), with vocals, guitar and percussion of the principal performers from the African Guitar Summit.  Songs chosen by the Grannies were performed by the Wakefield Group Immaterial, and singer Bethan Nodwell appeared with her new combo Bethan and the Boys. During the day drumming workshops for youngsters and adults were offered by Kathy Armstrong and Rory McGill of the Baobab Tree Drum Dance Community Solstice Books, Wakefield's new bookstore, hosted a story telling program with Wakefield Grannies chairperson Mailee Rhody reading African children's stories. All proceeds of this event go to support the Alexandra Gogos in South Africa, who are raising their grandchildren, orphaned by AIDS.

September 15.  CD release party for the group Harmonic Distortion, with Cameron Morrison, Pat Latreille, Mitchell Chevrier and Adrienne Plouffe.  The show will also feature Nefarious Souls, In Safe Hands and special guests.At the R.A. Hall in Shawville, at 6.30 pm.Admission: $3.00.Harmonic Distortion’s CD will be on sale at $10.

Competition for Visual Artists.  The City of Gatineau has announced, in anticipation of the annual celebration of Les Culturiades on Wednesday, October 25, that it will accept submissions of original works of art, of which one will be selected by a jury for award to the recipient of the Hommage Ville de Gatineau prize during the celebration. The City invites the participation of artists living in the Outaouais region (region 7) and the National Capital region (125 km radius) to submit an original work created during the past three years.  The deadline for submissions is October 11 next. From September 29 to October 1 Photographer Joan Bakker, originally from Shawville, has an exhibition of some of her work at Café 349, in the town where she was born. She will be joining other Pontiac Artist Association members in the presentation of a show at Portage du Fort.

A Call to Artists for Submissions for an Exhibition in 2007.The Espace Pierre-Debain in Aylmer invites artists engaged in a variety of media to submit entries for an exhibition to be held at the Centre culturel du Vieux-Aylmer, 120 Principale, Gatineau, in 2007. Deadline for submissions :
September 15, 2006.
Submissions must include :
- ten recent pieces of work on CD-rom or slides
- curriculum vitae
- a summary of your artistic career
- a brief description of your proposed exhibit

October 7 and 8.  First Annual Fall Art Festival at Campbell's Bay.  Hosted by Atelier du Druide, with the support of Raymond Sander-Regier, professional printmaker from Shawville, and Chantal Auger, professional potter. The Festival features the work of local and regional artists and artisans.
