A medical clinic provides general medical care through family doctors. For specialized treatment, patients are referred to a hospital or a medical specialist. All accept the Québec Health Insurance Card. Some clinics require appointments while others have walk-in clinics. LOCAL COMMUNITY SERVICE CENTRES (C.L.S.C.s)

A C.L.S.C. provides basic health and social services, as well as rehabilitation or reintegration services to individuals residing in its geographical area. It advises them on, or refers them to, those resources most able to be of assistance to them. C.L.S.C.s are the access point to the regional network of health and social services. Some C.L.S.C.s have medical clinics offering the same services as most private clinics.
 
Everyone has access to the C.L.S.C. services in the territory where they reside. Although the C.L.S.C.s listed below must provide services in English, your first contact may occur in French. If this is the case, you must request services in English. If you are unsure which C.L.S.C. serves you, any of the C.L.S.C.s listed below can advise you accordingly.
 
C.L.S.C. offices are usually open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday to Friday. Here are some of the services you can receive at the C.L.S.C. near you:
 
· Intake, assessment and orientation;
· Basic health and social services for youth, families and the elderly;
· Dental and nursing care in schools;
· Home care and assistance;
· Mental health services;
· Industrial health and safety;
· Community action;
· Information, referral and health advice.

HOSPITALS
 
Hospitals (CH) offer emergency services, diagnostics, and general and specialized medical care including nursing care, specialized psychosocial, prevention and rehabilitation services. The Outaouais region is served by one acute care hospital with a regional mandate (C.H.V.O. Gatineau Pavilion and Hull Pavilion) and four local ones. Acute care hospitals take in-patients for up to 90 days and traditionally provide 24 hour emergency service. Chronic care hospitals take patients for over 90 days.

Admission to a chronic care hospital requires an evaluation by a C.L.S.C. for people living at home, by an acute care hospital for hospitalized patients, or by a reception centre for individuals living there.
 
Adults staying in chronic care hospitals must help pay for their room and board.
 
C.H. - stands for "centre hospitalier"
C.H.S.L.D. - stands for "centre hospitalier de soin de longue durée" (residential and extended care facility).
