RAWQ Activities & Projects for 2007
Education Committee called to Action
RAWQ took a decisive stand against the
change to the Université du Quebec en Outaouais’ Language Policy. Despite the
efforts of the organization and the community at large who opposed the change
overwhelmingly, the University opted to cancel it’s master’s level Business
courses offered in English. The faculty and partners, are now considering the
option of creating an independent Institute to provide this service to this
community.
OHSSN
The Outaouais Health and Social
Services Network supports the English-speaking community in their efforts to
improve access to health and social services by fostering links with the health
and social services providers. If you are looking for information on health and
social services please contact our coordinator, Danielle Lanyi.
Community Theatre Table
West Quebecers have been working with the Wakefield Players, Aylmer Community
Theatre Company, and the Pontiac Players and school theatre programs to form the
Regional Community Theatre Table. The group continues to network and is
considering a collaborative project across the region.
New Residents Program
Since its launch in the summer of 2003
thanks to an initial grant by Canadian Heritage, this program has been a great
success in reaching out to Anglophone individuals and families who move to West
Quebec and helping them adjust to life here and access services in English.
Nursing
Retention Program
In partnership with
McGill University and Heritage College, the Regional Association of West
Quebecers has received funding for a Retention program to provide nursing
students with supplemental French language training so they may be better
prepared to work in West Quebec upon completion of their programs. The project
has completed it’s first year and sees much success.
Community Outreach Committee
expands its activities
RAWQ’a Community Outreach Committee planned to expand it’s activities to include
at least one major membership event per quarter this year . The first of the
year was a highly successful afternoon at a Cabane a Sucre in L’Ange Gardien.
The Community Awards Banquet and the Annual Golf Tournament continue to be major
events for the association, and the groups intends to look into an expedition in
the Gatineau Hills in the Fall.
Expanding Community Partnerships
and Fundraising
With the goal of
networking to create the most effective voice possible for the English-speaking
population of West Quebec, RAWQ has many community partners and we will continue
to focus on strengthening those relationships.
Membership Survey
Work is currently underway
for a Membership Poll to be conducted in the Summer 2007. Members will be asked
to provide their input on the service that the association is providing.
